The beach got its name from the Aboriginal term 'Bondi' or 'Boondi', which means 'the noise of water breaking over the rocks'. For a long time, Bondi Beach had been a suburb dominated by the working class community where the majority of the population comprised of New Zealand migrants.
Bondi Beach is perhaps the most visited beach in Australia for its beautiful white-sandy shore and waves ideal for surfing and swimming. The beach is about 1km long located 7km east to the City Central, in the area of Waverley Council in Eastern Suburbs.
Each August, City to Surf race with around 63,000 participants takes place in Sydney and Bondi Beach is the end point to this race. In 2007, an event to establish the Guinness record for the largest photo shoot for swimsuits took place at the Bondi Beach, where more than 1000 ladies in their swim suits took part. Other annual events and festivals around the Bondi Beach include Flickerfest in January - an international short film festival, World Environment Day celebrations in June and 'Sculpture by the Sea' competition in November where artists take part.
It's helpful as a tourist that there are a number of quality hotels and restaurants in the vicinity of Bondi Beach. There's nothing like spending the entire day in the beach, go for a cool drink, eat some fish and chips, then retire to your hotel room nearby when the sun goes down.
A large number of Irish and british tourists who visit Sydney during Christmas celebrate the Christmas Day at the Bondi Beach. It also hosted the beach volleyball event for the Sydney Summer Olympics in 2000.a
